Our jump start service in Sacramento is for the moment you turn the key and nothing useful happens. We come to your home, your workplace or the roadside, get the car started, and test the battery and charging system while we are there.

A jump is a quick fix, but a car that won't start is not always a battery problem. The sounds it makes, or doesn't make, tell us a lot. Below is what the most common no-start symptoms usually point to, so you have an idea before we arrive.

Signs you need a jump, or more than a jump

  • Rapid clicking when you turn the key
  • Dash lights come on but the engine won't crank
  • Slow, labored cranking that gets weaker with each try
  • Lights left on overnight or the car sat unused for weeks
  • The battery warning light was on during your last drive
  • Corrosion or a white crust on the battery terminals

Car won't start: what the symptoms usually mean

Car won't start and just clicks: a fast clicking sound usually means the battery has enough power to trip the starter solenoid but not enough to spin the engine. A single loud click with no cranking can point to a failing starter or a bad connection at the starter.

Car won't start but the lights come on: dash lights need very little power, so they can glow on a weak battery that can't crank the engine. It can also be a corroded terminal, a starter problem, or an issue with the ignition switch or security system.

Car won't start with no clicking at all: complete silence can mean a fully dead battery, a loose or broken cable, a blown fuse, or a shifter that isn't fully in Park. We check the simple things first.

Won't start after getting gas, or even with a jump

If the car won't start right after filling up, the issue is often in the fuel or evaporative emissions system rather than the battery. A faulty purge valve, for example, can flood the engine with fuel vapor during refueling. A jump won't help with that, but a diagnosis will.

When a car won't start even with a jump, or won't start with a new battery, the battery is usually not the problem. The likely suspects are the starter, the alternator not charging, a bad ground or cable, or a fuel or ignition fault. That is where testing beats guessing.

Jump start service in Sacramento heat and cold

Long stretches of triple-digit summer heat in the valley wear batteries out from the inside. They often fail weeks later, on the first cool morning, when the engine needs more cranking power. If you needed a jump this fall, the summer may have done the damage.

Short trips also play a part. A car driven only a few minutes at a time may never fully recharge its battery, which is common for commuters who live close to work.

If testing shows a starter, alternator or wiring fault, that repair may be done the same visit in many cases. In HOA communities we can only jump start or replace the battery, not repair the starter or alternator.

Jump Starts is one of the emergency services we can do inside HOA communities.
